What is a 21st century company
or organization?

In this day and age, where the speed of change is accelerating rapidly,
people’s values and the role of organizations are changing dramatically.
Here we explain BIOTOPE’s vision of what a 21st century organization should be like,
and what kind of individuals it needs.

people’s values and the role of organizations are changing dramatically.
Here we explain BIOTOPE’s vision of what a 21st century organization should be like,
and what kind of individuals it needs.

This is an illustration of the 20th century organization, which was based on centralization of power. Since it was easier to predict the future in the 20th century, it made sense for many companies to manage employees through a top-down system; a pyramid, with managers at the top. Now, however, digital networks allow each individual to express their values freely, and this makes it harder to manage them with a top-down approach. To stay adaptable, a 21st century organization must respect and liberate each person’s values and humanity, so that they understand, agree with and participate in the company’s mission.

The process of internalizing one’s company’s mission starts by bringing out each individual’s imagination. A conception of the future is visualized and prototyped by comparing the individual’s feelings with the company’s mission. This is then connected to a societal context, which increases understanding. Moving forward, organizations will need to increase the number of people who are able to carry out this process on their own. Such individuals will act autonomously, but with the organization’s mission in mind; and mix freely to utilize a wide variety of resources. Eventually, the company will change into a 21st century organization which co-creates the future.

For a 21st century organization, a collection of individuals, there are three important elements: mission, resources and future vision. Independent individuals understand and agree with an attractive company mission, and freely recombine and reorganize both internal and external resources (including human resources and infrastructure). Their organization transforms, and moves towards a future vision composed of individual intentions. In other words, they utilize a range of resources and expand their network while keeping the organization’s mission in the center, involving all kinds of people from within and outside the organization, accelerating into the future together. Our conception of the 21st century organization is a horizontally expanding structure, like a galaxy as in the illustration.

What value can we provide?

We provide three values based on the three elements essential to a 21st century organization: Vision Design, Transformation Design and Archetype Design. We flexibly recombine these three values depending on the context to provide holistic support.

Vision Design

We support in visualizing the latent fantastic ideas as an ideal image of the future; along with structuring the current system, and foreseeing and creating a path to reach the ideal future. We will draw out this vision and communicate it both internally and externally in order to gather like-minded people.

We imbue the organization with a creative culture and process for building the business models and products/services of the future. By turning the employees and their like-minded into evangelists, this culture will autonomously and organically expand across and beyond departments and company.

We combine societal signs and trends with deep consumer insights, explore the space of possibilities, and create and prototype new service and product models. We prepare a place where we cooperate with consumers and experts from different fields to create new services and businesses, and support in the physical shaping of prototypes.
